Meatballs are cooked by frying, baking, steaming, or braising in sauce. In Sweden frikadeller is meatballs that have been boiled in soup or stock/broth instead of being fried. If you’ve never been a fan of spaghetti and meatballs, try making barbecue-flavored meatballs, or make your own Swedish meatballs rather than heading over to Ikea. (Be that as it may, we’ll always love this meatball recipe!) It was recently confirmed by Sweden that Swedish meatballs you know and love actually aren’t Swedish after all. There is a Swedish dish called “Frikadeller” too, but it differs from the Danish one. The sauce is truly where meatballs reach their potential; by just switching up the sauce, the same meatballs can be used to achieve a wide range of flavors. Kottbullar, popularized by Ikea, flesh out their ground meat with bread soaked in milk and cream, and are served with potatoes, a brown gravy and a sauce made with lingonberries.Modest variants may be found throughout Scandinavia. Make the pickled cabbage: Combine the vinegar, sugar and 1 teaspoon salt in a medium saucepan. A classic dish is frikadeller in cabbage soup…everyone who went to school here during the 80’s and 90’s have been force fed that dish, haha! Add the cabbage and bring to a boil. A meatball is ground meat rolled into a small ball, sometimes along with other ingredients, such as bread crumbs, minced onion, eggs, butter, and seasoning. While it’s unclear what triggered the recent fact-check, it was recently revealed that the meatballs—the traditional holiday meal served in IKEA’s worldwide actually aren’t Swedish after all.
